This year, the joint conference of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology was excited to bring thousands of eye care professionals and industry leaders to the Moscone Center located in San Francisco. Held October 24-27, this event featured more than 1500 peer-evaluated scientific presentations, in addition to over 100 hours of free scientific sessions. The Tom Landry Classic held its tenth annual competition on August 29, 2009, at the Southern Methodist University’s Gerald J. Ford stadium. The Tom Landry Classic was started with respects to Tom Landry, the acclaimed, legendary coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 1960-1988. The event is one of the largest competitions in high school football in the country, and receives more than 22,500 people in attendance. In addition, the event offers a scholarship to the winning team’s event participants, including football players, student mangers, student trainers, band members, cheerleaders and field performers.

Understanding LASIK Surgery

Many patients have heard about LASIK eye surgery as a way to eliminate their dependency on glasses and contact lenses. Many people are apprehensive about undergoing such a procedure since they are scared to have some “cut” on their eyes. To help alleviate some of the fear, Dr. William Boothe, a leading laser eye surgeon located in Dallas has provided a basic understanding of what happens during a LASIK procedure.

After a one-on-one consultation at Boothe Eye Care and Laser Center, many patients return a few days later to undergo their vision correction procedure. On the day of surgery, patients are asked to arrive to the center an hour prior to their surgery time. This allows the team at Boothe Eye Care and Laser Center to sit down with the patient to complete any necessary paperwork while also prepping the patient for surgery. During the surgery a patient will lay flat on a comfortable table with their head stabilized. After propping the eyes open, Dr. Boothe will anesthetize the eye before beginning the actual surgery. The first surgical step is the creation of the corneal flap. This is done to allow access to the cornea, which is the site of the refractive error. Creation of the corneal flap can be done one of two ways. One way is with a microkeratome, which is a bladed instrument. The other way, and the way Dr. Boothe performs the surgery, is with a femtosecond laser. Dr. William Boothe is proud to offer his patients the iFS femtosecond laser which is one of the safest on the market. By using a laser to create the corneal flap, it allows patients to have “Blade-Free” LASIK. Once the corneal flap is created, Dr. Boothe will carefully fold it back. At this point a cool excimer laser is used to ablate, or smooth, the cornea. This corrects the refractive error that causes the patient to need prescription vision correction.

Once the surgery is complete, Dr. Boothe will gently turn the corneal flap to its original position, where it will act as a natural bandage. This allows LASIK surgery to be a stitches free procedure.

After surgery and the corresponding tests, patients will typically be able to return home. Though they will not be able to drive themselves home, many patients vision is so dramatically improved that by the next day they are able to get behind the wheel without their glasses or contact lenses.

INTACS, is a procedure for reducing a mild degree of myopia and is being studied for reducing both hyperopia and astigmatism. INTAC inserts are an alternative to laser surgery. INTAC inserts are tiny, crescent-shaped prescription material made of plastic polymer. The inserts are implanted in the periphery of the cornea during a surgery process. They are usually not noticeable and require no maintenance like contacts. The effect they have is to flatten the cornea for better focusing and providing crisp vision. INTAC inserts can be removed and replaced if a need for prescription changes. Removal of INTAC inserts causes vision to regress to the condition they were before the insertion of INTACs.

Dr. William Boothe => As we age, the lens of the eyes becomes rigid, loses its flexibility, and thus its ability to focus as well. The exact cause of presbyopia is still under research and debate. One theory is that the fibers in the lens become stiffened and are unable to change shape as well. Another theory is that the lens grows too big and is not able to change shape as well. Other factors such as trauma, occupation, and lifestyle may be factors as well.

Newer allergy eye-drop preparations: Recently, new classes of eye drops for the treatment of itching due to allergy have become available over the counter. Zaditor, a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drop, is an example of these.

Anterior Ocular Segment - A name for the parts of the eye that are in front of the lens, namely, the cornea, anterior chamber, iris and ciliary body

The inner sides of the eyelids, which touch the front surface of surface of the eye, are covered by a thin membrane (the palpebral conjunctiva) that produces mucus to lubricate the eye. Natural oil for the tears is produced by tiny glands located at the edges of the eyelids, providing additional lubrication for the eye. LASIK DALLAS - Dr William Boothe => Flying Spot - A method of applying the excimer laser light used in refractive surgery. A flying spot laser is used, which has a 1mm - 2mm diameter light beam. The computer that controls the laser is programmed to send pulses to changing spots on the cornea, with no spots overlapping. Part of the ophthalmic laser system is an eye tracker, which responds to all eye movement during surgery. So even if the eye moves while it’s being treated, the entire targeted area will be treated, because the treatment plan has determined where the laser should shine, in the series of flying spots that will cover it entirely, and the whole system moves to correspond with any eye movements during surgery.

Dr William A. Boothe => To correct astigmatism contacts called toric, can be specially designed for people with astigmatism. Minor degrees of astigmatism can be corrected with soft toric lenses. High degrees of astigmatism are better corrected with eyeglasses or RGP toric contact lenses. Toric contact lenses are more expensive than normal contacts because of the extra correction provided on them. Surgical treatments for astigmatism include LASIK Eye Surgery (Laser in-situ keratomileusis) and CK (Conductive keratoplasty) for people over 40, Astigmatic Keratotomy (AK), and Orthokeratology. LASIK reshapes the cornea by removing tissue. In Astigmatic Keratotomy, an older treatment, an eye care surgeon places incisions in the periphery of the cornea to change its shape for better vision. Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, uses RGP contact lenses to gradually reshape the cornea. The reshaping of the cornea is not permanent however and the special contact lenses will still be worn a few hours a day to keep the new shape. Only minor degrees of astigmatism are best treated with this method. The correction of astigmatism is constantly being researched. New advances in materials and technology will greatly help people with astigmatism see clearly again.

If you notice words looking blurry on a page, a dark or empty area in the center of your vision, or crookedness of straight lines, you may have symptoms of macular degeneration. You may lose vision in one eye but be able to see well out of the other eye. You will notice central vision problems more quickly if both eyes have macular degeneration.
